Izzo pleased with toughness against Badgers
EAST LANSING - Michigan State took a big step in defending its Big Ten title with a gutty 54-47 win over rival Wisconsin. The win over the Badgers was the first win over a ranked opponent in conference play for Michigan State in a game Tom Izzo characterized as a quality win for his basketball team.
Michigan State moved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten with the victory. The Spartans received key contributions from several players including Chris Allen, who led the Spartans with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Allen scored nine of Michigan State's 22 points in the first half.
The junior from Lawrenceville (Georgia) also played strong defense during his 31 minutes of playing time on a night in which he and his teammates held Bo Ryan's ballclub to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and just three second-chance points.
Izzo was pleased with the play of Allen and he was proud of his team's defensive effort against Wisconsin.
Draymond Green was the only other Spartan player in double figures. Green scored 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor. Green also added 5 rebounds and three assists.
