Dr. Phillips defender holds six offers
The recruiting season has heated up for LaQuentin Smith of Orlando. After holding just a couple offers at the beginning of the year, Smith now has been offered a scholarship from six schools - with two of them coming out of the Southeast Conference and another two from the Big Ten.
Smith, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound defender from Dr. Phillips High School, filled up the stat sheet last year, posting 97 tackles, six tackles for a loss, seven pass break=ups, four forced fumbled and even caught three passes on offense. Smith runs a 40- in 4.6 seconds and has a grade-point average of 3.0.
All of those numbers have college recruiters drooling and five, offering scholarships. The list includes Michigan, Illinois, South Carolina, Auburn, Central Florida and Colorado State.
The Rams have dispatched Offensive Coordinator and recruiting wizard Pat Meyer to Dr. Phillips High School, where he has reeled in four current or future Rams, including Nico Raineri, who has a shot to start at quarterback for CSU this year. Smith said that group has been letting him know their hopes that he come to Fort Collins next year.
"Nico tells me about it every chance he can," Smith said. "It's like I would have people from my school going to my school. They are telling me to jump on the bandwagon and we can start our own DP High School up there. I haven't seen them lately, but Pat Meyer is always around the school like he is one of the kids out here. Who knows? I might see him today?"
Also in contact with Smith is Central Florida, which is asking Smith to come in and play defensive back. South Carolina's pitch is to play defensive back in their cover 2 and cover 4 schemes.
"They run a cover 2 and cover 4, which is the same thing they run down here," Smith said of South Carolina. "They said they need DB's because they only have one coming back. I like their defensive scheme and they have Coach Spurrier who is a legendary coach. It can't get any better than that."
Auburn has recently offered after also offering Smith's Dr. Phillips teammate, Dee Hart. Smith said he spoke with Tiger head coach Gene Chizik last week and is interested in that program.
More offers could come as spring practice starts on May 3 and more schools can see Smith in action.
"I know me and Dee Hart are talking about making ourselves a package deal, Smith said. "I am telling Hasean (Clinton-Dix) the same thing, but he is stuck on Alabama and Florida. I am telling everyone in the Class of 2011 we should all go to the same college and contribute to the same college."
