Skinner ready to start career at State
Mississippi State was deep at linebacker in 2009 leaving very little room for an incoming freshman like Deontae Skinner to make an impact.
But with the graduation of Jamar Chaney and the loss of Bo Walters due to injury, Skinner is working this spring to secure a spot on the depth chart in 2010.
"The spring is going real good for me," Skinner said. "We've got a new defensive coordinator in so I've just got to pick up and learn the plays. Really, I'm just out there trying to do my best to get a role on the team."
The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder is working hard to learn the playbook and new scheme set forth by new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.
"Coach Diaz is a great coach," Skinner said. "He's got me playing the Will so I'll be blitzing a lot coming off the edge. I just like the Will because that's where I wanted to play in the beginning so the Will is a good position for me."
Skinner feels that making the move to weakside linebacker is only natural considering his background as a rush end at Noxubee County.
