Thames shifts focus to safety
Dennis Thames came to Mississippi State as a four-star athlete out of nearby Louisville where he was a standout on both sides of the ball.
Thames spent his first season in Starkville working out at wide receiver but decided to make a switch to safety this spring.
"It was just something I wanted to do," Thames said. "I played a lot of offense and defense in high school. When I got here, the offense really wasn't clicking with me so I went to defense and I feel comfortable over there and I'm going to leave it at that."
Even though his stint at wideout in his redshirt season does not help that much with his move into the secondary, Thames feels that the most important thing for him to do is to pack on some pounds.
"I think the redshirt year helped because I came in lightweight," Thames said. "I needed some weight on me to play SEC football. Right now I'm about 190 and I came in at like 173 so I think it helped a lot."
It also gave him a chance to adjust to football in the Southeastern Conference and college life in general.
