Is Watkins ready?
It's a scenario not many fans like to consider, but it's a valid question to ponder, especially for the coaching staff. What happens if Northwestern's starting quarterback -- slated to be Dan Persa in 2010 -- gets injured?
Each of the last two seasons, coach Pat Fitzgerald has been forced to entertain the idea. In 2008, C.J. Bachér injured his hamstring, forcing him to miss games against Minnesota and Ohio State. In 2009, Mike Kafka tweaked his hamstring, causing him to miss time against Penn State and Iowa.
If anything happens this season, redshirt freshman gunslinger Evan Watkins would likely take Persa's position behind center. As Fitzgerald likes to say, Watkins would be "the next guy up. He's just one play away." But that raises the question, will Watkins be ready to lead Northwestern's offense if Persa goes down?
