Junior college receiver commits to Ole Miss
Darrin Moore expected to spend another season at Blinn (Texas) Community College before turning his focus to recruiting.
Ole Miss had other ideas.
So instead of getting ready for fall camp at Blinn, Moore has spent the last few days finishing some online courses so that he can make the trip to Oxford in a week or so to resume his Division I career.
Moore, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Plano, Texas, committed to Ole Miss late Friday. Assuming he can wrap up the online courses in the next few days, he'll report to the Rebels' fall camp on Aug. 9 or Aug. 10. Moore will count against the Rebels' allotment of 22 initial grants-in-aid for the 2010 recruiting class.
"I had planned on staying another year," Moore said Saturday. "Ole Miss called my coach because one of their receivers (Patrick Patterson) was kicked off the team. I was able to graduate if I took these online classes, so I though that would be a good deal for me."
Moore admitted he doesn't know a lot about his future home.
"I know they're a good team and they put receivers in the NFL," Moore said.
Moore, who signed with UTEP out of high school, redshirted in his one year with the Miners before transferring to Blinn. He caught 37 passes for 569 yards in his one season at the community college level, catching passes from quarterback Cameron Newton, who signed with Auburn.
"I worked more on my routes, getting in and out of cuts, catching the ball through traffic," Moore said.
Ole Miss, already thin at the wide receiver position before Patterson's dismissal, signed Vincent Sanders and Quadarias Mireles in February. Sanders is expected to report for fall camp next weekend. Mireles' status, however, remains very much in doubt. Moore said he expects to push for playing time early.
"Coaches tell you that you can come in and play, but I know it's up to how I come in and produce," Moore said. "I feel like it's a great opportunity for me. It's perfect timing."
