Brewer enjoyed atmosphere in Lubbock
Austin (Texas) Lake Travis quarterback Michael Brewer was in Lubbock this weekend for the Red Raiders' Big 12 opener against Texas. Though the end result was not ideal, the 2011 Tech commit came away with a productive feeling.
"I took my official this weekend and had a great time in Lubbock. I got to sit in on a few meetings, which was really cool. I was able to talk to a lot of the coaches," Brewer said. "We were able to get into the whole pregame deal. I got to go down on the field and hang out before the game with some of the other commitments and recruits, which was good. I got to talk to some of the guys that we're still working on and just had a chance to catch up with some commits I hadn't talked to in a while. I think it was definitely a productive day for us as a class."
"I just had a great time at the game and it was an incredible atmosphere. I can't wait to get out there and play on that field one day."
Even in the loss, Brewer was able to get a glimpse of where the program is headed. The defensive play of the Red Raiders is what stuck out the most for the 2011 standout.
"Obviously it didn't turn out the way we would have hoped it to. I thought the defense played pretty well. A lot better than they have in years past and you can definitely tell that they're headed in the right direction," he said. "The offense just couldn't quite get into their rhythm. There were just a lot of penalties and mistakes that were holding them back. Overall I think that they have a chance to be really good this year. They've got a chance to do some good things in the Big 12 and go to a good bowl game. I think the season will work out well for them. I had a great time at the game and the atmosphere was incredible. I can't wait to get out there and play on that field one day."
The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder is in the midst of a rehabilitation effort after being injured early in his senior season. The timetable for his return is still yet to be determined. With an open week looming on the other side of this weekend, Brewer indicated it may still be a few weeks before he returns to action.
"My rehabilitation is going good. I haven't played the last two weeks and it will be a gametime decision again this week," he said. "We have a bye week next week, so if I'm not at one-hundred percent I won't play. We'll take advantage of that extra week I have to rest and get better. I'm just trying to be smart about it and not do anything before it's fully healed. I'm ready to get back in right now, but it won't do us any good if I come back to soon and am re-injured. I trust our staff and they'll help me to know when the time is right."
Brewer committed to Texas Tech in early March over offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, East Carolina, Kansas, Rice, Tennessee, Texas, and Tulsa.
