Bobek, team rebounds
The 2010 season didn't start out the way Ohio State commitment Brian Bobek hoped it would.
Bobek's Fremd High School team got off to a slow start, winning just one of its first five games. Then, the 6-foot-2, 278-pound four-star offensive lineman from Palatine, Ill., received his jersey for the US Army All-American Game and the team suddenly found its stride.
"We were 1-4 but we turned it around and knocked off a 7-0 team last week to put us at 4-4," Bobek said.
The All-American game jersey presentation probably didn't have much to do with Fremd's turnaround, but it sure didn't hurt.
Bobek said most of the problems the team encountered early in the season were self-inflicted.
"We would let up for a quarter or even less and that would be the difference in the game," he said. "Also, it seemed we could never catch a break. We had zero luck in the first part of the season."
Despite the struggles, the Fremd players never quit. Their resiliency led to a midseason turnaround that now has them just one win away from qualifying for the post-season.
"The work ethic in practice and the overall focus of the team completely turned around and put us back on track," Bobek said. "If we win this week we're in (the playoffs)."
Individually, Bobek said he's improved his technique this season and he's eager to continue working hard on his game to prepare him for the Army game and his future at Ohio State.
Because his focus was on helping his team turn things around, Bobek said he hasn't completely felt the impact of being named an All-American.
"I've been so focused on our team that it's been hard to even think of anything else," he said. "I was really excited because I got to watch the game last year after the combine and saw what a great experience it is."
Bobek has yet to have the opportunity to visit Ohio State during the season, but he plans to do that later this year to watch a game and he'll return when he makes his official visit on Dec. 12.
