Young receivers prep for 2011 season
With Derek Carr as the starting quarterback and Head caoch Pat Hill's statement that the Bulldogs will air out the ball some more in the 2011 season, the Bulldogs are relying on young receivers such as Sophmores Jalens Saunders and Isaiah Burse to conitnue to improve on their 2010 seasons.
Saunders comes off a true freshman season as a Bulldog in which he lead the team in kick returns averaging 23.2 yards per return and also leading in the average receiving yards with 15.4 per reception. He was a stand out on special teams and saw a lot of action as a receiver. He was one of the `Dogs most consistent receivers playing in all 13 games, recorded 30 receptions for 462 yards and racked up three touchdowns.
"I really wanted to get better at everything, so I focused on improving my whole game," said Saunders. "I didn't focus on one thing, but wanted to improve overall."
Speed was definitely an improvement in Saunders' game and with the Bulldog Stadium surface upgrade to FieldTurf, the speed will be even more noticeable.
"Turf means speed," said Keith Williams Fresno States receiver coach. "Turf allows for better footing and a great showcase of the `Dogs speed."
Burse comes into the 2011 season trying to improve on a freshman season that saw him play in all 13 games and finsih with 13 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns, He also ran the bal 16 timess for 85 yards and one touchdown.
Burse contributed on the special teams as well last season with a kick return average of 26.3 yards a returns. He had 22 attempts for 578 yards. He also had one blocked punt in a game against Cal Poly last year.
One reason Burse ahs been working hard this summer is his excitment to play with quarterback Derek Carr.
"Working with Carr has been good," said Burse. "He is very versatile and with him we have been able to open up our playbook and add a lot more to our offense."
With the new turf being installed inside of Bulldogs stadium and recivers such as Saunders and Burse, Fresno State should have a firework show every night inside Bulldog Stadium.
