Gettis prepared for NFL Combine
Unlike his teammate Riley Reiff, the first round NFL Draft mock drafts don't contain the name Adam Gettis. But, the former Hawkeye hopes to raise his NFL stock next week when he heads to Indianapolis for the annual NFL Combine. Gettis talks about his training in Arizona since the end of the season, his hopes for the combine, and his plans afterwards.
Q: What has this whole draft process been like for you since the Insight Bowl?
GETTIS: It's actually been pretty interesting. After the bowl game I ended, I stayed in Arizona and started working out at PEP, which is a place that trains college athletes. They have treated me very well here and we have been putting in a lot of work. It's been fun, but it's also a lot of work to prepare for the combine. I'm really excited about this opportunity.
Q: Did your agent suggest staying in Arizona?
GETTIS: It was something my agent brought up, but he also said I could stay at Iowa. Obviously that was my first choice because Coach Doyle is the best guy for this sort of stuff, but I felt like I needed to work out with other talent around the nation and see how I stack up.
Q: There's probably something to be said for working with others and maybe getting a different perspective having worked under Coach Doyle and his staff for five years.
GETTIS: Coach Doyle is the best and he really knows what he is talking about. We have been doing a lot of the same stuff we did at Iowa and that helped me coming here because I feel like I was prepared. Coach Doyle works every part of the body with us when we are training. But, having something different doesn't hurt either and I have enjoyed it down here.
Q: In talking with guys who have gone to the NFL Combine in the past, they always say it's a different type of training because it's training for a test. Do you feel that way too?
GETTIS: It really is and you only have two shots at this with the NFL Combine and then Pro Day later on. You are working on specific drills and lifts for the combine, like the cones and jumps. We do a lot of those to train and get better in those testing areas.
Q: Zusevics and Reiff are back in Iowa City training. Have you been in touch with those guys about how their training has been going?
GETTIS: I haven't talked to those guys recently. I've talked to Julian (Vandervelde) a little bit and Marvin (McNutt) is down here and I've talked to him a little bit as well. I need to get in touch with those guys and look forward to seeing them in Indy.
Q: Julian went through all of this last year. What sort of advice has he given you?
GETTIS: Julian is Julian. I saw the interview with him the other day and he was awesome. (laugh) The one thing that he told me was don't do anything different. You are a Hawkeye for life and that's the way it should be. Whatever you did as a Hawk, you did it on the field. He just said do what you do and you have been trained by the best in Coach Doyle. I know where he is coming from with that.
Q: Marvin is down there is Arizona too and you said you have talked to him. Have you been able to work out with him?
GETTIS: We are training at different places. He is at API and I have seen him a few times and we were able to hang out for a while. He's doing really well and is working hard.
Q: Have the nerves started to hit about the combine and are those nerves the same as you might feel going into a football game?
GETTIS: I never really got nervous about a football game because you are out there with your best friends. But, this is up there. I am a little nervous, but I know that I have trained very hard and I am ready to get after it at the combine. I'm just excited to be out there with some of the top players in the country and try to prove myself.
Q: Have you practiced the Wonderlic test yet?
GETTIS: (laugh) Yes, a couple of times. I thought I was done taking tests. They have done a great job here at PEP preparing us for the test. They have a teacher out here that works on preparing you for it. Honestly, it doesn't seem like it's too bad.
Q: Is there added pressure on you going into the combine as compared to someone like Reiff?
GETTIS: Actually I feel like there is less pressure on me because I don't think there are high expectations on the outside for me. I think they expect a lot from a guy like Riley because he is expected to do big things there. Hopefully I go there and have a great combine and show people that I have the ability to play at the next level.
Q: Have you started getting caught up in looking at mock drafts and things like that?
GETTIS: No, never. I learned that at Iowa, don't get caught up looking at that stuff. I won't spend time on that stuff.
Q: What's your plan after the combine? Are you headed back to Arizona?
GETTIS: I am going back to Arizona and continue working out. Then when the Pro Day comes in Iowa City, I'll head back and probably stay there until the draft and train with Coach Doyle.
