Defense evolving rapidly
AUBURN -- Gene Chizik hired Brian VanGorder last winter because the Tigers clearly needed a change of direction on defense.
The differences, players say, couldn't be more numerous.
Auburn donned full pads for the first time since the spring on Monday and dedicated four periods to live-action work. Only now, after months of studying and preparation, can the Tigers begin painting a true picture of what VanGorder has brought to the Plains.
That picture involves more aggression and complexity.
"There are a lot of things that go into it instead of just going out there and running and hitting and playing base coverages," safety Demetruce McNeal said. "A lot of guys have to think more this year and really know football. We're out there
just showing how much we really know from the past -- and we really don't really know that much right now."
