Tech rising to occasion
SAN MARCOS, Texas - Former Texas Tech basketball guard Nick Okorie was on hand in red to see the Red Raiders take on Texas State in what was ultimately a 58-10 victory for the Big 12 school.
Prior to the game, however, Okorie was as interested as anyone in what's going to happen to head men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie.
When the conversation reverted to former men's basketball head coach Pat Knight, Okorie stood up for his head coach, a coach who helped get Tech ranked as high as No. 10 in the winter of 2009 before a major implosion and just an NIT berth.
Okorie said Knight was coaching the team fine and then the players on the team had a little bit of success they started doing their own things. When their own game styles cost the basketball team games and the mistakes and losses snowballed the team just could not recover.
Any coach or experienced player will tell you, whether you're winning or losing, it's all about how you respond to the situation.
Okorie and approximately 8,000 Red Raider fans gave a standing ovation to a Tech football team that stood Texas State up at the line of scrimmage on a fourth and one play that forced a turnover on downs late in the third quarter and helped Tech take a 55-10 lead entering the fourth quarter. The game had been in hand for a long time, but that fourth down stand at the Texas State 34-yard line was the exhale point.
There was no way Texas State was going to score another point the way they were carrying themselves and the way that Tech defense kept playing them.
