Laurence Bowers is still learning, even in his (relative) old age. The fifth-year senior said lessons learned in a 97-94 overtime loss to UCLA served the Tigers well on Saturday in a 66-64 win over Bucknell.
"That was in 2012. I don't really like talking about it," Bowers joked. "I think that we're a pretty good team. And pretty good teams learn from games like that against UCLA. We didn't execute down the stretch and we wanted to make sure that we didn't have any of those type of plays in this game. I thought everybody on the court showed true toughness."
Frank Haith said the Tigers put in extra work on late-game situations in practice after the loss to the Bruins. It paid off with a hard-fought win over the Bison.
Phil Pressey took a career-high tying 22 shots on the day, making ten, and scored a career-best 26 points. It was Bucknell's plan coming in to force Pressey to beat them shooting the ball.
"He's the best passing point guard I've coached against since I have been at Bucknell," Bison coach Dave Paulsen said. "Our goal with him going in was to make him score. Not 26, but to not be a distributor."
"I just have to respect what the defense is giving me," Pressey said. "We ran offense and I know when we run offense, whatever shot presents itself, I have to take as well as my teammates."
