Bulldogs snap 13-game skid
STARKVILLE, Miss., - Rick Ray said following Saturday's game that the rivalry didn't matter to him.
But for several thousand fans and eight players inside Humphrey Coliseum it did. The two combined to give Mississippi State enough energy to upset NCAA-minded Ole Miss 73-67 and snap a 13-game losing skid.
"I don't concern myself with that at all," Ray said of defeating Ole Miss and hurting their Big Dance dreams. "I don't concern myself at all with that. I'm just a game-by-game person. But if that's what it took for (MSU's players) to get going - to beat Ole Miss and get a game at home - then that's their motivation. But as a staff we never mentioned anything about that at all."
The victory was the first for the Bulldogs since defeating Georgia on Jan. 12. MSU extended their home winning streak over the Rebels to four games and improved to 8-20 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
The Bulldogs shot 41.7-percent from the field led by a career-high 21 points from Colin Borchert. The junior forward was 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 behind the arc while also leading the team with seven rebounds.
"Coach always tells me once you hit a couple of 3's (defenders) are going to be flying at you," Borchert said. "I just shot faked and got to the rim. I was just listening to the coach. He's a very smart man so I might as well use it."
