It can sometimes take awhile for a talented recruit to get the notoriety and, consequently, the offers that he deserves.
That is exactly what has happened with Hardee (Wauchula, Fla.) defensive end Keyon Brown.
Brown was the MVP of the Florida VTO camp last spring as a junior, and was one of the top performers at the Rivals Underclassman Challenge in DeSoto, Tex. during the summer.
Despite having strong showings at both camps, the offers didn't exactly start pouring in, but almost a year after earning MVP honors at VTO, schools are coming hard after the Sunshine State pass rusher.
"At first things weren't that great in recruiting. I was kind of worried about not getting a lot of offers," Brown said. "Lately, things have started picking up. I've gotten offers from Ole Miss, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, Marshall, North Carolina State and all those are the most recent offers."
The Georgia offer came yesterday, and the Bulldogs made sure Brown knew he was wanted by signing a couple of big guns to give him the news.
"I was in class and one of our coaches texted me and told me to come to his office after that period," Brown said when asked how he learned about the UGA offer. "I went to his office and he called one of the coaches, and I talked to Coach (Mark) Richt, the head coach, and then the defensive coordinator (Todd Grantham), and Coach Richt let me know I have an offer from Georgia."
One thing that came up in the conversation was what position Georgia would be recruiting Brown to play.
The Rivals100 prospect liked what he heard.
"They are recruiting me to play outside linebacker," he said. "I like it because that is what I like to do. I like to rush the passer and I think it is a great fit for me."
After getting the Georgia offer, Brown decided to do a little research on the Bulldog defense and came away impressed.
"I don't know a lot about the program, but I just know they (Georgia) have a great defense and they get after it," he said. "I was watching a highlight tape on them today, and they really get after it and make plays."
Now that things are starting to pick up at an alarming pace for the four-star prospect, Brown says he is in a situation where he has some decisions to make on what schools he will visit.
He does, however, know of one school he will visit.
"I know I'll visit Georgia," Brown said when asked about his visit plans in the near future. "Right now, I don't know have plans to see many schools and we have to sit down and figure that out. Georgia is definitely a school I plan on seeing, though."
Making a decision is something Brown knows will be tough, and while he plans to put a great deal of time and effort into doing the right thing, he isn't going to rush his recruitment at all.
"This summer I'm probably going to start narrowing it down," he said. "I do want to take all of my official visits. I just want to enjoy the process. I'm not trying to rush things. I just want to make sure I make the right decision."
