'Quiet' Nelson makes plenty of noise
Jordy Nelson, the 6-foot-2, 213-pound junior who is considered among the top returners at wide receiver in the Big 12 Conference, was tough to catch for an interview over the summer. He hopes to be equally tough to chase down this fall. Aside from summer classes and workouts in preparation for fall camp, the native of nearby Riley had another viable and noble excuse for his absence.
"I drive the truck into town and back to the farm," said Nelson, who spent the early part of summer helping out with the wheat harvest back home in Riley. "It's fun. It's when you actually make the money, so it's good."
Funny. Teammates believe Nelson, who led the Wildcats in receptions (45), receiving yards (669) and touchdowns (eight) a year ago, is money on the field. Off the field, Nelson wouldn't let you know it, though.
"I just like the way he handles himself," sophomore quarterback Allan Evridge said. "He's just a quiet farm boy. That's kind of what everybody calls him. Him and Yo (Figurs) go back and forth (about it) a lot. He's quiet and has a good demeanor. He handles his business, doesn't complain, does his stuff and goes hard. He just does things right and he's someone you can always count on."
