Soften-spoken Herring keeps goals quiet
Life just got a lot more interesting for Ray Herring.
The soft-spoken safety can start to state his case for playing time after Charlie Weis revealed on Wednesday that the final practices of training camp's opening week would shine a light on reserve defensive backs and wide receivers as Notre Dame steps out of base packages.
"Now that we're into multiple defensive back packages, I think I'll have a better feel for that in a couple days," Weis said when asked for his evaluation of Notre Dame's younger defensive backs. "We just need to have more time when they're going against the good guys and we can see what they can do."
