Spring Preview: DL
It's unexpected, but Texas A&M finds itself thin on the defensive line, especially at tackle, as spring drills get closer. After losing seniors Bryce Reed and Marques Thornton, the Aggies are moving towards inexperience inside next to soon-to-be senior Red Bryant.
Redshirt freshman Kellen Heard seems to be a the best bet to see a lot of time inside next to Bryant. Last season Heard showed signs that he has a bright future at tackle for the Aggies. Many time Heard wreaked havoc in the opposing backfield, but finding time with the more experienced Reed and Thornton was tough to come by. Now Heard will have his chance to shine.
Former junior college transfer Henry Smith also had good moments last season and will have a chance to earn a starting spot on the line. Smith will be a senior, and has one year of Division I experience under his belt.
But other than Bryant, Heard and Smith, the Aggies will be scrambling in hope that someone will step up and fill a void in the rotation. The top candidate will be former offensive lineman Lucas Patterson who has been moved to defensive tackle.
Patterson will replace Leslie Ray who had an injury that is forcing him to give up football and Vincent Williams who has moved to the offensive line.
