Confident Mitchell enters senior season in charge

As quarterback Blake Mitchell enters his final spring at South Carolina, the LaGrange, Ga., native will look to improve upon a strong finish to the 2006 season that saw him regain his starting position late in the season and lead the Gamecocks to three straight victories, which culminated in an MVP performance in the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl. In today's column, we will take an in-depth look at the quarterback position heading into spring practice, which begins March 20.
Before Steve Spurrier arrived at South Carolina, Mitchell was a seldom-used reserve that oftentimes bared the brunt of former head coach Lou Holtz's tirades in practice. Mitchell was broken. He had no confidence and had contemplated a transfer. That's why there was no other player more excited when Spurrier was named head coach shortly after the end of the 2004 season. It was like a re-birth for the 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller.
