Walls ready to make good on potential
Corwin Brown didn't draw the comparison. But mentioning the three cornerbacks in the same sentence, maybe even the same paragraph, didn't make much sense.
Yet there Notre Dame's new defensive coordinator was, talking about Darrin Walls, Ty Law and Terrell Buckley at the same time. Law and Buckley were both first team All-Americans, first round draft picks and have combined to play in 26 NFL seasons. Walls has seen action in just eight collegiate games.
"I wouldn't put myself in that group yet," said Walls, his eyes bulging wide with surprise and bemusement.
The fact Brown would think of linking Law, Buckley and Walls reveals plenty about the expectations attached to the soon-to-be sophomore. Walls arrived at Notre Dame as a Top 100 prospect with the size and speed to make an immediate impact. He delivered by hanging with Calvin Johnson in a season-opening win at Georgia Tech but descended down the depth chart after a woeful performance against Purdue.
