Davis makes the move to linebacker
For the past two years, it has seemed the only thing keeping Connell Davis off the football field on Saturdays was the ability to hang on to the football. Now, Missouri coaches are asking Davis to cause fumbles. No one mentioned fumbling as a cause on Tuesday, but regardless of the reason, Davis went through his first practice at linebacker as Missouri returned from spring break.
"We talked to Connell right before we left, right after our last practice," said Gary Pinkel. "He came in after the break, thought about it and said, 'I want to play linebacker.'"
Davis was recruited out of Portland, TX as a 6-foot-2, 210-pound running back. He rumbled for more than 2,800 yards in his final two seasons. But even then, many speculated he was bound for the defensive side of the ball.
"I never thought about it," said the 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore. "I thought I was just going to compete to the best of my ability and win that number one running back position."
But after the meeting with Pinkel, Davis jumped on board with the move.
