Early Impact: Barnes wants to start as freshman
The comparisons to Sidney Rice may be a bit unfair right now but wide receiver Jason Barnes embraces them.
Barnes, the subject of an intense, back-and-forth recruiting battle between South Carolina and North Carolina eventually won by the Gamecocks, understands that USC fans are anxiously looking for him to replace Rice, who departed for the NFL after two sensational seasons.
With a void at the wide receiver position behind Kenny McKinley, clearly the No. 1 option right now, Barnes will get every opportunity along with several other incoming freshmen to show what he can do in fall camp. There are a lot of spots on the depth chart up for grabs.
Barnes is eager to continue the tradition of wide receivers from Independence High School in Charlotte starting for their respective schools as freshmen.
