Saunders hopes to become tight end weapon

GamecockCentral.com With Andy Boyd and Robert Pavlovic concluding their college careers after the upcoming season, South Carolina urgently needed to sign a quality tight end in the 2007 recruiting class.
Enter Weslye Saunders.
Considered one of the top tight ends in the Southeast, the 6-foot-5, 283-pound Saunders resisted the urge to sign with his home state university in order to come to Columbia and become a pass-catching threat in Steve Spurrier's offense, a rarity for a Gamecock tight end over the last decade.
"I think if I come down there in good enough shape I'll have a chance to see some playing time," Saunders said. "But if I'm redshirted I won't be disappointed. That would give me an extra year to get better. But I would love the opportunity to play right away."
