Dawgs begin preparing for the Cowboys
The Georgia Bulldog football team hit the field turf on Monday afternoon to start preparations for Oklahoma State. They began working against the scout team and are getting ready for their practice game on Thursday. Head Coach Mark Richt was surprised by how well his team handled the 100-plus degree temperatures on the field turf.
The coaching staff has to decide this week on who will redshirt and who will play this year because they need time to prep the new faces for special teams work. Only a handful of players appear ready to play according to coach Richt, but a lot still sit on the bubble.
Here is what Coach Richt had to say about the events of the day.
The fun is over from here. I tell you what is an understatement, it was hot out there today. We went out on the field turf and I do not know if we should have, but it was definitely hotter on the field turf. It is a safer surface right now. The grass is not getting as much water as we would like and the grass fields are getting harder because of the lack of rain. So, we decided to go on the field turf where it is hotter. We chose a little safer surface we thought and it has a little warmer temperature. The guys held up real well and I was proud of them. We got everything done we wanted to get done and cancelled conditioning afterwards. I thought they did a good job.
Scott Haverkamp re-sprained his ankle, it was the same one and he tweaked it. Kiante Tripp was back from his ankle. A lot of the guys came back, but Caleb King did not come back. Jarius Wynn is still messing with the groin a little bit. Bryan Evans got to work today and I think he did everything. Coach Willie Martinez might have held him out of something, but he seemed to get everything. We did break into scout teams today and began to work Oklahoma State on both sides of the ball. Thursday we will scrimmage that look. We will have what we call a practice game and we will play a half of football and do third-downs. We will simulate everything from the pre-game warm-up to how we leave the locker room to the field. We will go out the proper gate and come back in by the bulldog. We will try to get a dress rehearsal.
