Nice and easy for Zulu
In an unexpected move, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has handed the field goal kicking duties over to a South African called Zulu.
Although the Buckeyes return kicker Aaron Pettrey from last season, Tressel announced today that it will be redshirt junior Ryan Pretorius, not Pettrey, handling the majority of the field goal kicking duties this fall while Pettrey continues to handle kickoffs.
"Ryan has really worked to be consistent and he really was throughout the fall and through the bowl season," Tressel said. "But when you are going along okay you usually don't do a whole bunch of changing. Somebody won the job and they were doing satisfactory until you get a chance to re-open it again. We didn't do that for the bowl game because both were fairly consistent there, but our staff just thinks that Ryan deserves an opportunity."
While Pettrey struggled mightily during today's kick scrimmage, Pretorius showed off the consistency which has won him the starting job. He connected on each of his first four kicks and finished the day 5-of-6 in field goal attempts before the final three attempts were blocked due to a breakdown in protection.
