Three walk-on 'backers prepping for action
Boulder, Colo. - With Marcus Burton academically ineligible for the 2007 season and Michael Sipili suspended indefinitely, the Buffaloes' depth at linebacker has taken a big hit.
With little more than a week until the Buffaloes' season opener against Colorado State, two former walk-ons are one play away from finding themselves in a starting role at the inside linebacker positions. A third former walk-on is battling with redshirt freshman B.J. Beatty for the backup role at outside linebacker.
Sophomores Jake Duren (at mike linebacker), Jeff Smart (at will linebacker) and Bryan Stengel (at sam linebacker) are all confident that they can get the job done should their name get called.
"All of those guys, when you can get reps [in practice] and you're not standing around, you're feeling better," head coach Dan Hawkins said of Duren, Smart and Stengel.
