Don't forget the D
With all that's gone on around Alumni Stadium in the days since the bowl win, the defense has gotten rather lost in the shuffle.
Think about it. Aside from the Brian Toal thing, you don't hear anything about these guys. The head coach left, the new coach is an offensive guy; all the assistants on the offense are new; the blocking scheme is new and has been a question mark; while the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach are back; the quarterback is the ACC preseason player of the year; the new offense is giving that quarterback more freedom to call plays.
On and on the story lines go.
What do you hear? There's the Toal thing - and if you have to lose a guy like Toal, you might as well have a ton of guys ready to take his place. Heck, it's almost like you hear more about how Toal will be missed on offense - there's that word again - than on defense. Jeff Jagodzinski has told anyone who will listen how much he loves Jamie Silva; the "bulky" guys in the middle aren't quite as bulky and are quicker.
Not A whole lot. The transition has been smooth because there really hasn't been any transition. It's still Frank Spaziani's defense and Spaz continues to be an underrated guy around these parts (and that's not even counting his undefeated record as a head coach).
