NC State, O'Brien earn first win
RALEIGH -Three hundred and 45 days is a long time.
The North Carolina State football team enjoyed the taste of victory for the first time in 345 days Saturday by defeating Wofford 38-17 in front of 56,039 at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack improved to 1-2 overall and host Clemson on Sept. 22, while the Terriers fell to 2-1.
NC State snapped a nine-game losing streak with the Wolfpack's last win coming against Florida State, 24-20, on Oct. 5, 2006. It was a complete win for NC State and the first victory of the new Tom O'Brien era.
"Well, we obviously are happy about getting a victory," said O'Brien, who said the players tried to sing the alma mater song after the game on the field, but didn't know all the words. "I don't even think they knew how to celebrate once they got back into the locker room. They just kind of cheered with each other. They didn't know what to do."
Getting back on the winning track was crucial for the Wolfpack, even if it came against a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team.
The Terriers were paid a reported $250,000 to play the Wolfpack, and it was money well spent since NCSU was able to learn the feeling of winning again.
"They got the 800 pound gorilla off their back," O'Brien said.
