Gray is good as Gold!
The wait is finally over and Indianapolis Ben Davis four-star quarterback MarQueis Gray was finally able to tell the country about his college plans. Those plans are to play quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Gray announced his college decision during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas just moments ago. Gray becomes the first prep prospect to put a 'M' hat on during the national televised game.
There was no doubt when Gray made it official this afternoon on national television.
"I said it loud and clear to make sure that everyone heard that I am a Gopher!"
Although Gray's decision wasn't announced until today, it was a done deal months ago.
"I have been Gopher for a long time now! I told the coaching staff that I wanted to be a Gopher during my official visit but that I had made a commitment to wait and announce my decision during the Army All-American Bowl."
"It was very hard to keep my decision quiet and after a while I just got tired of people asking me where I was going. I am just glad that my decision is now public and everyone knows that I am a Golden Gopher."
Gray talked about the party that went down in the Bierman building on September 30th.
"The Gopher offices really went crazy when I made my decision. We were sitting in Coach Tim Brewster office and he asked me if I wanted to be a Gopher. I told him, 'Yeah' and before I could finish Coach Brew sprinted out of his office to go and get the entire coaching staff. When they all came back into the office my mom started to cry and she gave me a big hug. Coach Brewster just told me that he was fired up and wanted me to help him recruit."
The Gophers have now earned eight verbal commitments from the nine visitors with scholarship offers from the weekend of September 28th. Did Gray play a role in making it such an efficient weekend?
"It was sort of hard because as soon as I committed I had to act like I didn't because my decision couldn't be public until today. I started to talk to big Jewhan Edwards, who my mom calls 'Big Baby', and also started to talk to all of the Skyline recruits that were there that weekend. I just told them that I was really thinking about coming to Minnesota and they should come too."
"It was really a great weekend because we all felt that the Gopher staff really wanted us to be there. We were all able to watch the Ohio State game and they were very competitive but I think we could all tell that there were some areas that could use improvement and it wouldn't take too much to impact the team."
"We have a lot of great recruits heading to Minnesota next year and I am excited to play with all of them. I have heard about Brandon Green and I already have a relationship started with Edwards and the Skyline boys. I am just ready and can't wait to start playing with them."
It didn't take long for Gray to indicate the main reason he decided to become a Golden Gopher.
"It was Coach Brewster. He was definitely the reason I chose to attend Minnesota. When I got hurt and broke my arm he sent me a letter that was signed by the entire staff at Minnesota. In the letter he asked about how I was doing and also how my family was doing. That letter really showed me that not only did he care about me as a football player, but he cared about me and also my family."
"I also think that I am going to fit in really well with the Gopher offense. They run the spread and my strengths are my abilities to run and throw the ball. I just think it is a perfect match."
Gopher running back coach Thomas Hammock recruited Gray to Minnesota.
"I love Coach Hammock. He a funny guy who that will bring this class and the entire team together. He will be a big reason this program gets to teh promise land!"
Rivals.com ranks Gray as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 3 prospect in the state of Indiana for the class of 2008.
