Video: Gill breaks down defensive line
EAST LANSING - Michigan State defensive line coach Ted Gill met with members of the local media on Thursday to answer questions about his defensive line two weeks into training camp.
Gill said he expects his line could go as five deep at the tackle spots with a rotation of four at the defensive end positions.
Senior Brandon Long and junior Oren Wilson have done a nice job hanging on to starting spots during camp. True freshmen Tyler Hoover and Cameron Jude look like they could be the No. 2 ends. Both players will have to finish strong to earn those roles. Dwayne Holmes will be fighting Jude for the back-up spot behind Anderson.
Gill said that Ishmyl Johnson has shown some rust from sitting out for an entire year. Colin Neely is ahead of Johnson on the depth chart.
Justin Kershaw has had a fine camp and will start at defensive tackle. The battle for the nose tackle position is not over. Oren Wilson has a slight lead over Antonio Jeremiah.
Red-shirt freshmen Kevin Pickelman will get some snaps as a back up to Kershaw. Gill says that Ryan Wheat has played well enough to earn a spot in the tackle rotation.
