OT Barrent gets All-American honor
Earlier this week Michigan State offensive line commitment David Barrent of West Des Moines Valley High School in Iowa received an impressive honor, he was named to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Team. The honor is bestowed upon players considered the best in the nation for the class of 2010. The 6-foot-7 298-poundsBarrent becomes the second Spartan to receive this honor this year. SpartanMag.com spoke with Barrent about his selection.
"I found out that I was going to be selected back in the spring," Barrent said. We had a small press conference at school. It was nice. My coaches, teammates and family were there. The local TV station and newspaper was there to cover it."
What type of things did you get to do at the press conference?
"I got to that the people that helped me get to where I am," he said. "I thanked all the coaches that have helped me throughout my career. I thanked my family for all of the support and I thanked my teamster for making me better, without them I would have gotten to where I am."
The selection to the Army All-American Game also has special meaning to Barrent as he presently has a family member serving in Iraq.
"My cousin Brian hart is over in Iraq, so this doe shave special meaning, he said. It is exciting to know that I can support him by playing in this game."
The game itself will be played on January 3rd in San Antonio at the Alamo Dome. Barrent will not be the only Spartan that will be participating in the game. Michigan State running back commitment Edwin Baker has also been selected to play ion the game. Baker was presented with his All-American jersey earlier this month.
There has been some speculation tat Barrent could be graduating early and joining the Spartans for spring practice. Spartanmag.com asked Barrent about that and he indicated that he plans on graduating in May with his class, participating in the normal senior activities with his classmates and throwing the shot and discus for the track team this spring.
Barrent also informed SpartanMag.com that he speaks with his recruiting Coach Dan Roushar on a weekly basis and they talk about their respective games. This past weekend was an especially good talk as the conversation focused on the Spartans big win over the Wolverines and Barrent's team getting ready for their first playoff game that will be played tonight.
