Middleton & Kearse Talk Willingham
This past Monday, Washington Head Coach Tyrone Willingham announced he would be resigning effective at the end of the season. The move came following the Huskies' seventh loss in seven games. The move was not a surprising one, considering Willingham entered the season on the hot seat. Jermaine Kearse and Kavario Middleton addressed the media earlier this week to discuss the issue.
"I was pretty surprised. We got an e-mail before everything happened. I think everyone was kind of expecting a change at some time, but didn't know when. It was surprising that it happened this quickly. That was initial reaction," expressed Kearse. "I think a lot of people probably preferred a face-to-face [meeting with Willingham], but I guess it was a spur of the moment thing that had to be done - it doesn't really bother me."
"Jermaine texted me in the morning and asked me if I heard about it, and I was wondering what he was talking about. I was pretty surprised when he told me," explained Middleton. "A lot of people knew it going to happen. We didn't win games, so it was inevitable."
Does this change things in any way for the duo from Lakes High School?
"No, at least not for me. I'm still going to work hard, and push myself to be a better player," said Middleton. "I was going to come here anyways. I like Coach Willingham, he's a good guy, but I was going to come here regardless."
"It doesn't change much for me or this team. It's going to affect the offseason, but I don't think everyone's focusing on that right now. We've all got a goal, and that's to win some ball games, so I think that's what our main focus is going to be these next six weeks. That's what I'm going to focus on, and hopefully that's what this team focuses on." expressed Kearse. "When I committed here, I committed to the school and not the coach. Coach Willingham recruited me, which I was thankful for, but I came to play at the University of Washington, and that's what I'm intending to do."
