Easterly's stock beginning to soar
Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Mich., is well known for producing Division I football prospects. This year alone, Michigan signed three Tech players: William Campbell, Thomas Gordon and Teric Jones.
After losing those three to graduation, expect Tech to reload as usual. That said, a couple names on the early radar are Daniel Easterly and Dior Mathis, both of whom played a big role as juniors.
Thursday night, BadgerBlitz.com caught with Easterly, a 2010 prospect who has been shooting up the charts throughout the course of the pre-evaluation process. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, Easterly has already garnished the attention of a handful of BCS schools.
The following is a question and answer segment with Easterly.
It's fairly early in the process, but could you list the schools that are currently recruiting you?
Easterly: Let's see, Michigan, Michigan State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Toledo, Miami, Texas, Wisconsin, USC and Indiana. Those are the ones I know off the top of my head.
You mentioned Wisconsin, have you been in steady contact with them?
Easterly: Yeah, I actually just got an e-mail from Coach (DelVaughn) Alexander yesterday. Our contact has mainly been through e-mail. Coach (Alexander) wants me to make the trip for their junior day. He said Wisconsin is very interested in me.
Do you have any thoughts about the program?
Easterly: I really don't know a whole lot about Wisconsin. I was looking at their campus and facilities on the Internet the other day. It looks nice. I'd really like the chance to go to their junior day and see what they have to offer first-hand.
You live in the state of Michigan. That said, do in-state schools such as Michigan and Michigan State hold a slight advantage?
Easterly: I wouldn't say that at all. All the schools interested in me, I'm interested in them. If they take the time to research me, I'll do the same. Distance won't be a factor in my recruitment.
You attended the U.S. Army All-American combine. How did that go?
Easterly: It went real well. I did very well down there.
Did you receive any feedback from any of the coaches or analysts?
Easterly: I played both sides of the ball. I participated with the wide receivers and the defensive backs down there. I really didn't get any negative feedback. They really liked the way I moved. They said I move very well for a guy my size and height. I get off the ball really well and my routes are real crispy (laughter). Yeah, they said my routes are crispy. The analysts told me I'm a playmaker. I made a lot of plays down there. I just really enjoy the game.
You're listed as an "athlete," but what position do you plan on playing at the next level?
Easterly: This year on varsity I played cornerback, safety, quarterback, receiver, tight end. I don't have a preference. I can play anything, wherever coach needs me I'll play.
What are some of you best attributes on the field?
Easterly: Honestly, aggressiveness. I bring the hype. I'm able to pick-up the team when they need help. If the team needs me to make a play, I'll make a play. I always say, "Just put me in the game, coach, I can make a play."
Have you been to any junior days? Also, do you have any lined up?
Easterly: I've been to Toledo, Notre Dame and Alabama. I plan on going to Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Florida and Miami. I'd really like to go the Wisconsin's and speak with the coaches out there. Also, USC when they get back to me.
How about camps? Do you have any camps or combines set up?
Easterly: I'm going to make it to as many camps as possible. I just want to show my face. I want some of the coaches to see my ability.
