Quarterbacks ready for the challenge
A new coaching staff and a new offense equal a wide open competition for the starting quarterback job this spring.
Junior Kodi Burns ended the season as Auburn's starter and is the most experienced quarterback on the roster. But he understands that if he wants the starting job in 2009, he has to earn it on the practice fields.
"I'm used to (the competition) by this point," Burns said. "I've been through a lot of ups and downs at Auburn. This time right now is one of those ups for me.
"Even though it's a competition, I feel really comfortable and excited about this season. I can control what I can do. I leave it all on the field."
Last year, Burns competed head-to-head with Chris Todd for the starting position. Todd started five of the first six games before Burns took over for the final six.
But when AU opened spring drills Tuesday night, Todd could only watch as Burns, junior Neil Caudle and redshirt freshman Barrett Trotter split the reps.
A senior, Todd had shoulder surgery a couple of days before Christmas and is still rehabbing. When and if he'll join the quarterback competition this spring remains uncertain.
