Defense dominates Spring Game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two Defensive players - cornerback Donnie Fletcher and linebacker Mark Herzlich - recorded eight or more tackles and at least two pass breakups to lead the defense to a 47-21 edge in points over the offense in the annual Boston College Spring football game held Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Both the offense and defense received points for various plays/achievements, including first downs (one point), explosive plays (two points), sacks (one point), pass breakups (one point) and turnovers (three points).
On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore quarterback Dominique Davis completed 20-of-40 passing attempts for 145 yards with one interception. Freshman quarterback Justin Tuggle completed 2-of-7 attempts for eight yards while junior quarterback Codi Boek went 2-for-10 for 14 yards.
Tailback Jeff Smith rushed 16 times for 40 yards, including a long of 13. Montel Harris ran for 27 yards on 12 attempts and Josh Haden collected nine yards on three (first-half) attempts.
Senior kicker Steve Aponavicius split the uprights on the lone field goal attempt from 37 yards.
In addition to Herzlich (nine tackles, one TFL and three pass breakups) and Fletcher (eight tackles, two pass breakups), linebackers Nick Clancy (nine tackles, one PBU) and Alexander DiSanzo (seven tackles) lead the strong defensive effort.
At halftime, junior free safety Wes Davis was named the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a deserving defensive player.
