Gordon ready for a leadership role on defense
EAST LANSING - Michigan State junior Eric Gordon is ready to take a leadership role in a Spartan defense that he believes is the deepest and most talented group since Mark Dantonio's was introduced as head coach three years ago.
"Yeah, I feel more comfortable being in more control, not worrying about what someone is going to think if I ride them," explained Gordon, who finished second behind Greg Jones in tackles as a sophomore with 88. "I'm communicating a lot more, being more verbal with the D-line and the DB's. I think it's more of a maturity thing with me. Just kind of growing up and doing what a linebacker is supposed to do. The linebacker is supposed to be more verbal, the leader of the defense."
Gordon has several young and talented linebackers to lead including a talented freshman class that includes Chris Norman, TyQuan Hammock and Jeremy Gainer and red-shirt freshmen linebackers Drew Stevens and Steve Gardiner.
"They look very good," Gordon said. "They are all very fast and good athletes. They're also learning the defense very quick. They are putting in a lot of extra time to understand it. They are going to be really good."
