NU Media Day Notes: Callahan addresses Pederson extension
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - On Monday, Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced a five-year contract extension for NU Athletic Director Steve Pederson.
NU head coach Bill Callahan said at Monday's Big 12 Media Days in San Antonio he's very happy for Pederson that his contract has been extended for another five years.
"I am really happy for him," Callahan said. "That's great for him. Keith (Mann) had told me that Steve had got extended on our flight down, and that's great news for Steve and his family. He's a Nebraska guy and he wants to finish his career here, as I do. I think that's really good for him."
As for Callahan, his contract has yet to be extended by Pederson. However, Callahan said it's something he's not really thinking about heading into the 2007 season.
"We'll see," Callahan said when asked about his contract extension. "I'm never worried about it in terms of contracts. I'm kind of an old grunt that way.
"For so many years as an assistant coach you only existed on a one-year contract, so you did the best you could and you moved on, and that's always been my mindset."
Academic update for class of 2007
As of right now, Callahan said that defensive tackles Demetrious Davis and Joseph Townsend are the only two members of the 2007 signing class that will not be in Lincoln this fall.
Callahan said Townsend will enroll to NU in January, while Davis is being placed at Garden City (Kan.) Community College.
"I think everybody is above board," Callahan said. "Kevin Dixon is just finishing up a final as of today and tomorrow, so we should know shortly what his status is.
"Aside from that, everybody has made it. Jaivorio Burkes, according to coach (Bill) Busch has made it. I think we are now just awaiting word from the clearing house."
When asked about defensive back LaTravis Washington's status, Callahan said it's a "possibility" that he'll be in Lincoln as well.
