Patrick White talks Spartan commitment
Michigan State picked up and impressive commitment earlier today with Patrick White of Pickerington Central High School decided he would join the Spartan family. White who checks in at 6-foot-180-pound gave SpartanMag.com insight into his recruitment and why Michigan State is the place for him.
We asked White if the information about him comitting to Michigan State was accurate?
"Yes it is, it is a definite," he said. "I am very excited to be going to Michigan State. I can't wait to be a Spartan"
White selected Michigan State over a host of offers including schools like Oregon, Louisville, Kansas, Indiana and Cincinnati. The 6-foot-0, 175 pound what had close to 15 offers in total. So what was it about Michigan State that set them apart from the rest of the schools?
"What really sold me on Michigan State was the coaching staff and the relationship I have with them," White said. "When Michigan State offered me it was Coach Dantonio that I spoke with. We had a great talk. We talked for about 25 minutes and when we got off the phone he gave me his cell number and told me to call him anytime, that meant a lot. Coach (Mike) Tressel is also real cool and so is Coach (Harlon) Barnett."
What are some of the other factors you like about Michigan State?
"Michigan State is a program on the rise. I want to go there and help them win Big Ten Championship and compete for BCS Bowl games. I will do whatever it takes to help the team. I will play on either side of the ball", White said.
White is an exceptional all-around athlete and he informed us that the Spartans told him that he will play whatever position he excels at and can help the team the most.
White will be in East Lansing this Tuesday to meet with the staff, tour all of the new facilities and possibly bump into some of his future teammates.
White indicated that another positive aspect about Michigan State was all of the good things he heard about the University and the program from a variety of sources.
"My dad said Michigan State is a great place and so did my coach," White said. "I am also good friends with Chazz Anderson and he had a lot of good things to say about it as well."
The Spartans took a very long look at Anderson soon after Coach Dantonio was hired back in 2006. Anderson ended up signing with Cincinnati and is reportedly doing well. Anderson had a lot of rapport with the current Spartan staff.
White's commitment should make life around Pickerington Central High School a bit more interesting this fall, especially on teh practice field. Two of White's teammates are headed to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jamie Wood and Zach Boren.
White comes from a family of fine athletes. His father played at Ohio State before transferring to West Virginia to finish his career and his older brother, Terence, is on the roster at Ashland College. A recurrent knee injury prevented Terence from becoming a Division 1 scholarship player.
White saw his stock skyrocket this spring. He stood out at the Columbus NIKE Combine, being named one of the top performers there. Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Mike Farrell had the following to say about White's performance in Columbus:
"Pickerington (Ohio) Central receiver Patrick White has two teammates that are heading to Ohio State, so it's easy to say that he's been overshadowed quite a bit early on in the recruiting process.
As talented as four-star safety Jamie Wood and defensive lineman Zach Boren are, it's even easier to say after Friday that White is right up on that same level as the two Buckeye-bound prospects.
Listed as a cornerback, White made big play after big play at receiver at the camp at receiver. Cincinnati, Indiana and Akron have offered him already, but he showed he is good enough to play in the upper-level of the Big Ten on Friday.
"Patrick White to me was the best receiver in the camp," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said. "He was the most consistent. He caught everything. He had the best body control, as well. He gets off the line really well also."
SpartanMag.com will be following up with White later this week. We will get quotes about his visit to East Lansing and update Michigan State fans on his new Rivals.com position ranking.
