Spring Focus: SLB Eddie Pleasant
Youth. That will be the recurring theme for the 2009 Oregon linebacker group. The Sam position will likely follow the rule if the spring practice order holds. Sophomore Eddie Pleasant looks to have the inside track, and lucky for the Ducks, he has game time under his belt and a savvy veteran backup.
After the first half of spring practices, the Sam linebacker position looks like it will be in capable hands. At the top of the order at this point has been Eddie Pleasant, with walk-on senior Riley Showalter nipping at his heels. Coach Don Pellum also has talented sophomore Josh Kaddu in this mix.
Pleasant played extensively as a redshirt freshman in 2008 primarily on special teams. Proving himself as an explosive open field tackler in that capacity, the La Palma (CA) athlete began earning playing time on the defensive unit towards the end of the season. Coach Pellum has Pleasant on the top of the chart midway through spring.
“Eddie Pleasant is a tremendous athlete,” said Pellum. “He ran a 4.45 or 4.43 or something like that for us. He can fly. We keep thinking as coaches, ‘boy, Eddie is going to be a sophomore. He is a puppy.’ But me and Coach Al, we keep pushing him because we’ve seen him doing some things so well. But he will only be a sophomore and I think Eddie can be a dominant player. We’ve changed some things up so we are going to bring guys more, and he’s one of those guys who is fast with a high motor that we’re going to bring.”
