November 3, 2009
Each week, we'll look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing.
1. Many happy returns. Kansas State WR Brandon Banks returned a kickoff for a touchdown Saturday against Oklahoma, his fourth kickoff-return TD of the season. The FBS single-season record is five, set by Tulsa's Ashlan Davis in 2004. Three players have returned three kickoffs for scores this season - Vanderbilt's Warren Norman, Stanford's Chris Owusu and Clemson's C.J. Spiller.
2. "Take it away!" "No." Georgia has some poor defensive numbers - the Bulldogs are 68th in total defense (366.6 yards per game), 60th in rush defense (137.6 ypg), 73rd in pass defense (229.0 ypg) and 89th in scoring defense (29.4 points per game). A big reason is that the Bulldogs simply don't force turnovers; they have forced a nation's-low six (one fumble and five interceptions). The Bulldogs have a minus-15 turnover margin.
3. Offense vs. defense. Five of the top 10 teams in scoring offense are in the BCS top 10 (Boise State, Cincinnati, Florida, Oregon and Texas). Seven of the top 10 teams in scoring defense are in the BCS top 10 (Alabama, Boise State, Cincinnati, Florida, Texas and TCU).
4. The good and the bad. Florida plays host to Vanderbilt this week. It's the team that has punted the most this season - Vanderbilt, with 63 - against the team that has punted the least this season - Florida, with 21.
