GRANBURY- The Everman Bulldogs (8-2, 6-1) in a game that meant very little accomplished both of their objectives on Friday night in a 42-21 win over a much improved Granbury Pirates (1-9, 1-6) squad. The first objective was to get no one else injured, which for the most part was accomplished and the second was to win the game. Mission accomplished! Barry Browning showed he could be a threat in the passing game throwing for 128 yards and three touchdown passes and executing a two minute drill perfectly right before halftime to give Everman a 21-7 edge after Granbury had seized a bit of momentum.
Cory Franklin had another big night pacing the Everman ground game with 119 yards on just nine carries and two touchdowns, Franklin also caught a 53 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Marcus Click had a big night for Granbury with six receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Everman jumped on Granbury quickly as Darren Howard picked off a Drew Mainini pass setting up Everman in GHS territory. 11 plays later Everman scored as Browning threw his first touchdown pass to Shawn Sanders from ten yards out. After a Granbury punt Everman would strike again as Franklin got behind a Granbury LB and was hit in stride by Browning for a 53 yard touchdown pass and EHS led 14-0 after one quarter.
The majority of the second quarter was marred by sloppy play and penalties but Granbury would score with little more than two minutes left in the quarter with Click catching a 21 yard touchdown pass from Mainini cutting the Everman lead to 14-7. The Bulldogs would answer on a sensational four play drive with under two minutes left that proved to the back breaker. Browning hit back to back passes to Josh Jones for 39 yards and then broke off a 34 yard run down to the Granbury two yard line. After a timeout Browning would score on a two yard run to put the Bulldogs up 21-7 at the half.
Everman opened the second half up in dominating fashion scoring on their first two drives with Franklin scoring from 15 yards out and Browning hooking up for a second time with Sanders this time on a 27 yard touchdown pass and it was 35-7 Everman.
Granbury would add a score late in the third with backup QB Garett Gonzales hooking up with Brandon Wood for a 22 yard scoring strike to cut the margin to 35-14. Franklin would score once again in the fourth on a 53 yard run for Everman and Granbury would add a score on defense as Jordan Howell picked up a fumble by Everman's backup QB and raced 32 yards for the final margin of 42-21.
Everman opens up postseason play next Friday at 7:30pm against Fort Worth Dunbar at Pennington Field.
