January 22, 2011NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt used torrid shooting performances from 3-point range and from the foul line in building a big second-half lead, as the Commodores held on for an 89-70 victory over No. 21 St. Mary's at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Vanderbilt trailed 19-13 early, but a 30-9 run to end the first half helped them build a 43-28 halftime lead. The Gaels rallied within five in the second half, but never got closer.
Jeffery Taylor (19 points), John Jenkins (19), Brad Tinsley (18) and Lance Goulbourne (15) all scored double figures for the Commodores, who improved to 14-4.
Goulbourne added 10 rebounds for his second-consecutive double-double.
The Commodores did a stellar job on St. Mary's leading scorer, Mickey McConnell, who fouled out with 3:20 left and scored only six points on a 14.9-point average.
VU hit 50 percent from 3-point range (11-of-22) and 26-of-32 (81.3 percent) from the foul line, and out-rebounded St. Mary's 39-27.
