August 30, 2011Redshirt freshman wide receiver Ezell Ruffin will not play this weekend and could possibly be out for the rest of the season because of academic issues, San Diego State head coach Rocky Long said on Tuesday.
Ruffin, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound wideout, was expected to compete for one of the starting wide receiver spots this season and was also one of the leading candidates for the kick returner and punt returner job.
"He's not going to play this week," Long said. "He's still on the team, though. There's a chance he's going to play the rest of the year, but he won't play this weekend."
Long said if Ruffin can get his academic issues handled, he will be allowed to stay on the team and could possibly play in future weeks. But Long does not have a deadline right now for Ruffin to handle those issues.
"When he handles all his issues," Long said, "then we'll decide."
Long said SDSU will now use a rotation of four receivers - Dylan Denso, Colin Lockett, Aldodius Colquitt and Marcus Russell - against Cal Poly on Saturday.
