Turned out it wasn't quite that easy. The Cape Coral (Fla.) Island Coast safety announced during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl broadcast that he would follow in his father's footsteps and accept a scholarship from the Gamecocks by making a verbal commitment.
"I tried to look at Carolina in a new set of eyes outside of the fact that my father played at Carolina," Diggs told Rivals.com earlier this week. "When I went there Carolina felt right. It was just like my other visits."
Diggs is the 22nd commitment head coach Steve Spurrier has secured in the Class of 2012 and the fifth listed at defensive back. He is also the seventh four-star prospect among the committed and the only U.S. Army All-American.
Michigan State and Nebraska dropped from consideration when Diggs arrived in town for the week of practice leading up to his announcement. Even then, he admitted to not quite having settled on his final destination.
Rivals.com rates Diggs the No. 11 safety nationally and No. 39 player in Florida.
