April 17, 2012Lamel Matthews put up quality numbers at Washington (D.C.) Dunbar last fall in spite of the fact that he missed several games. Now he's poised for a breakout senior season and schools will be watching closely.
Matthews tossed 15 touchdown passes last year despite missing a lot of action with an injury.
"I missed about a month of the season because of a hyper extended knee," Matthews said. "I got it in the third game of the season and I was out until the final two games and then the playoffs."
With offers from Marshall and Temple it's clear that at least some coaches have seen enough from Matthews, in spite of his injury-shortened junior season.
Other schools are taking a hard look at him, including Boston College, Virginia and others.
"I just started talking to Coach (Al) Washington from Boston College," Matthews said. "A few days ago we talked for a while and he wants me to come up there and camp. I'm sending them my transcripts tomorrow. He said once they get that they should be good. I think they're going to offer."
If the Eagles offer Matthews would take a long and hard look at them.
"From what he (Washington) tells me they're switching to more of a spread next year," Matthews said.
"He said I would fit in perfect with them. He told me I remind him a little bit of Russell Wilson with my style of play. He said he saw a lot of similarities."
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback told EagleAction.com he doesn't have any favorites but wants to commit before his senior season.
