Houston (TX) Wheatley defensive end Marcus Loud flew under-the-radar because of a high school coaching change.
That didn't keep colleges away from Wheatley, however.
On Tuesday, Loud committed to Missouri over offers from Texas Tech, Iowa State, Colorado, Wake Forest and SMU, among others. Although he has yet to visit Columbia, Loud cited his familiarity with the coaching staff as a big reason for his decision.
"I've wanted to do it for about a week, and I finally talked to the coaches today," Loud said.
Missouri entered the picture for Loud in March, when the Tigers offered him by surprise. In the two months since, he's grown close to his recruiting coach, Craig Kuligowski.
Over that time, Loud said many of his questions to "Coach Kul" have centered around academics. During the past week, Loud realized he had the answers he was looking for.
"I really like their academic standards," Loud said. "They want you to fit their ideal of a student, and I liked that."
Education is important to Loud. He sets lofty goals on the field, and off the field they're even loftier. He said he plans to major in early education and kinesiology at Mizzou.
On the field, Loud said it's more than his size and speed that helps him succeed.
"My heart and dedication," Loud said. "I have a good motor and a will to survive, to outlast the opponent."
Loud is Missouri's 13th-known commitment, and the first defensive end for the Tigers' 2013 class.
