December 7, 2012LSU's basketball team suffered a big loss Friday afternoon when it was announced that starting point guard Anthony Hickey has been indefinitely suspended from the team for a violation of athletic and university policies.
"We will cooperate fully with the athletic department and the university on the matter," LSU coach Johnny Jones said. "There is a responsibility that comes with playing college basketball.
"If a player doesn't take care of his responsibilities, then he loses the privilege of being able to play. We look forward to focus on our upcoming game Tuesday and our three-game road trip that follows."
Hickey, a sophomore, had not started two of the Tigers' first five games for disciplinary reasons. He was suspended from the exhibition game against Arkansas-Monticello for, reportedly, missing a class. Hickey didn't start in the season opener against UC Santa Barbara.
Then, Hickey was not in the starting lineup against Mississippi Valley State for, reportedly, being late for a team activity. Hickey has averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 assists and 4.4 steals in the first five games. Hickey, who has averaged two turnovers, is playing 30 minutes a game.
"I know I have made mistakes and sometimes it takes mistakes in life to make you a better person," Hickey said. "I'm not perfect and I need to move forward and make better decisions.
"I know I have let my family down, my team down and LSU down. I will come out of this a much stronger individual. I pray to be back in my LSU uniform as soon as I can."
Freshman Corban Collins has started at point guard when Hickey was sidelined. Collins, who has averaged 10 minutes, has contributed two points and one assist per game. Collins has committed seven turnovers - just three fewer than Hickey in 100 fewer minutes of playing time.
Jones can also use Andre Stringer at point guard. Stringer was the starting point guard two seasons ago. In that campaign, Stringer averaged 11 points and three assists per game. He also averaged three turnovers per game.
Hickey was the starting point guard a season ago as a freshman. He averaged nine points and four assists per game in the 2011-12 season. Hickey was guilty of two turnovers per game last year.
LSU, which is in a break for semester exams now, will return to action next Tuesday against Chattanooga in the PMAC. After that contest, the Tigers will play road games against Boise State, Cal Irvine and Marquette.
