December 28, 2012Eighteen years of FBS frustration for Warhawk fans ended on Friday afternoon as ULM made their post season debut in the Advocare Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. Ohio ensured though, that the Warhawks would have to wait for another time for their first bowl win, as they rolled to a 45 - 14 win. The win marked Ohio's second straight post season victory, and the largest margin of defeat in the bowl's 37 year history.
Ohio (9-4, 4-4) took no time jumping out to an early lead over ULM (8-5, 6-2), as they used just three plays to drive 80 yards to take the 7-0 lead on the Tyler Tettleton to Donte Foster for the score. The scoring drive took just 70 seconds. With Browning throwing his first of three interceptions, the Bobcats were able to again quickly score, pushing their lead to 14-0 on a four play, 87 yard drive that ended with the Tettleton to Chase Cochran.
While the opening drive for ULM, stalled, the second possession saw senior Brent Leonard set a new school record for career receptions. He completed his Warhawk career with 208.
ULM did look to swing the momentum later in the half, as they halted an Ohio fake field goal attempt, but the offensive series was cut short, with Browning again tossing an interception, this time to Tremayne Scott.
The Warhawks finally broke onto the scoreboard early in the second quarter, as Browning connected with Tavarese Maye from 14 yards out, to cap off a five play drive. ULM would not find the end zone again until the 2:40 mark of the third quarter, when Browning found Kevin Steed.
Tettleton continued to torch the ULM secondary, as he ended the game 14 - 22 for 331 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Additionally junior running back Beau Blankenship took over, as he tallied new Independence Bowl records with four rushing scores, most total touchdowns, and most points.
