September 22, 2013LSU's ties with the deep-snapping Ferguson family run. well, deep.
When Class of 2015 prospect Blake Ferguson of Buford (Ga.) High verbally committed to LSU on Saturday, it made it likely that he will succeed his brother Reid Ferguson, who is a sophomore deep snapper with the Tigers.
"I have been attending LSU camps, made visits for several years, and of course, attended 20-plus LSU games since Reid committed in 2011," Ferguson told TigerBait.com. "I have developed a great relationship with Coach (Les) Miles and Coach (Thomas) McGaughey, and early on they told me they wanted me to play at LSU. The chance to play alongside my brother is a great opportunity that very few players get."
Ferguson's long snapping instructor Chris Rubio likens perfecting the art of snapping to a golf swing and said it takes hard work and intelligence. Rubio said LSU has landed a solid performer in the younger Ferguson (6-1, 235).
"Blake is an elite long snapper due to his form," Rubio said. "He has been with me since he was a child and just is always improving. He's an incredible long snapper and person who never stops improving."
Rubio added, "He fits perfectly with McGaughey and LSU. He knows the program."
Ferguson honed his craft this summer by attending specialist camps all over the country at Alabama, Florida, Oregon and Stanford.
"I've been snapping since seventh grade, and Reid's success motivated me to keep working and follow the same path," Ferguson said. "In addition to endless hours practicing with my brother and dad, I've also worked with Chris Rubio, my long snapping instructor for many years, and he's been a vital part of my success."
Ferguson is LSU's fourth commitment in the 2015 class.
"My family is excited about this opportunity for me and has been very encouraging and supportive the whole way," Ferguson said. "They are looking forward to many years of purple and gold to come."
Indeed, the Fergusons took to Twitter to share their news and reactions.
"Big congrats to my brother who has just committed to LSU," Reid Ferguson tweeted. "Can't wait to play with ya big guy!!"
Tracy Ferguson (aka @fergiemom86), the mother of Reid and Blake, responded in more succinct fashion -- "#wardrobemileage," she posted on Twitter.
