April 13, 2006Today at South Grand Prairie High School, Rivals100 offensive guard Tray Allen announced his decision about where he was heading for college.
The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder is listed as one of the top offensive lineman in the country and he had been favoring one team throughout much of the process. Allen decided that he had gone far enough and let everyone know the big decision.
"I'm going to Texas," Allen said. "It's the place I want to be at. I like everybody down there, they make me feel at home. The visit was the turning point. The crowd was calling my name saying 'Tray come here' or 'Tray come play for us.'
"I just wanted to talk to my mom first before making it official."
The family bond at Texas was a big reason why the Horns ended up with his commitment.
"They look out for each other and the players are like a big group of brothers," Allen said. "It's close friends of the family to that I know that are in Austin. My uncle's mom is down there, so it really helped knowing I had family down there."
As for why the commitment came very early, Allen said that he had thought it through and felt that it was the best time.
"It's for a number of reasons," he said. "I want to have security being able to lead my team in the fall and wanted to get things done so I can focus on school and maybe a state championship. I don't want people to keep wondering where I'm going.
I'm just ready to get there man and get this behind me. I knew where I wanted to go."
Allen was being recruited by Texas assistant coach Mac McWhorter and coach Bruce Chambers.
